What is The London Group?

It is a community of nearly 100 visual artists,
with a shared commitment to studio practice
and exhibiting their work.

What is the Open?

This biennial two part exhibition shows work
by members alongside that selected from submission by
non-members.

What are the selection criteria?

Visual art selected does not have to conform
to any school or media; this is an eclectic
group.

How do artists become members?
Artists’ names are put forward for a vote
by other members. Some artists are
chosen from the Open to be put
forward for membership.

Some have more commercial success, some have roller-coaster careers, many are influential within Arts
Education; all are equally dedicated to quality in production of thoughts and ideas. The majority of London
Group members, like the London Group itself with its long-standing history, have stood the test of time.
Ranging from younger and more recently elected members through to the established, there are those who
have shown with the Group since the 1960’s, its history going back to 1913.

The famous “open submission” exhibition, with which the London Group established one of its many
reputations since it began, is once again upon us. It can provide a proving ground for artists to
exhibit within. It is a community of artistic endeavour, with the aim to be inclusive, showing half the
exhibition as open submission.

The last few years have witnessed a wave of successful LG exhibitions, including those in
Amsterdam, Bath, the Guildhall, Deutschbank, plus the small highly successful thematic shows
such as, “Stand Alone”, a sculpture exhibition at the Cello Factory, “Act and Artefact”, exploring the
nature of drawing at the Morley Gallery. And with this Open, as with the last held in 2007, we intend
to cross boundaries and surprise ourselves as well as the audience. The invitation is open to all
artists from painting, sculpture, drawing, print, photography, mixed media, installation and video,
and will reveal a truly exciting mix.
